Old Brown Java sometimes called Old Government Java is grown on the volcanic island of Java in Indonesia. Old Java’s distinctive taste is achieved through a unique aging process of the beans which can take up to 5 years giving this coffee its unique full-bodied taste, with a hint of sweetness and no acidity. During this process, the beans change from green to brown, hence its name.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the raw beans were packed as ballast in the holds of sailing ships as they carried spices to Europe. The result was a rich, full-bodied coffee bean, tempered by the wood and the salt of the sea.
Old Brown Java’s intense earthiness is unique and for many, it is the only coffee to drink. Its strong, intense flavour makes it perfect for espressos and ideal for a cappuccino or latte.
